The Indian women’s team won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games.
The India women team has struck Gold in the ongoing Asian games 2023 at Hangzhou by defeating Sri lanka in a nail biting final here on Monday. While bundling out for a paltry score of 116, the Indian women team rode on the exceptional bowling performance of Titas Sidhu who claimed 3 wickets in her quota of four overs while giving away just six runs.
Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodriguez come to India’s rescue!
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur elected to bat first after winning the toss on a tricky pitch at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field, Hangzhou. After getting a good start, the team lost opening batsman Shafali Verma cheaply.
It then came to a solid partnership between the Smriti mandhana and Jemimah Rodriguez that took India to a respectable total. The runs on the scoreboard could have been more if India wouldn’t have lost their last 5 wickets for just 17 runs.
Unfortunately, both Mandhana and Rodrigues got out in their 40’s and that’s what stopped Indian from posting a healthy total.
Indian bowlers made a comeback after Sri lankan team went off to a flying start!
In reply, the Sri lankan team got off to a flying start with 12 runs from the first over of Deepti Sharma. Their captain Chamari Athapaththu particularly looked dangerous with her aggressive approach right at the start of their innings. However, it was all about the fiery bowling of the Indian fast bowlers from there on. Titas Sidhu, notably gave some hard blows to the srilankan middle order with those three wickets right at the start.
Even though Hasini Perera and Nilakshi De Silva showed some resilience with those scores of 20s, the Indian bowlers had the last laugh. At the end, the Srilankan team only managed to score 97 runs within their allotted quota of 20 overs.
With this win, the Indian women team has won the first Asian games Gold in the history of Women’s cricket. After losing in the recently concluded Asia cup in the hands of Bangladesh, this certainly comes as a sigh of relief for the Indian cricket fans.
